At check-in, competitors will receive a name tag indicating their Competition Level and Ring Assignment. For Black Belt divisions, check your name tag for either Section A or Section B to know if you’re competing first or second in your level. Beginner, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 you will all be competing at one time—no separate sections. Color-coded rings and venue maps will help guide you to the correct location.

Frequent Questions

Who can participate in the tournament?

The tournament is open to all martial arts students from participating CMAA schools, regardless of their experience level.

What schools participate in the CMAA Tournament?

The participating schools include Ripple Effect Martial Arts, Personal Achievement Martial Arts, Success Martial Arts, and Exclusive Martial Arts.

I’m a white belt. Can I compete?

Absolutely! Beginners, including white belts, have a special orientation-style competition experience. White belts will showcase their basic techniques—what they’ve learned in their first classes—during the basics portion of the event. This is a fantastic introduction to tournaments, designed to teach new students what competitions look like, where to go, and what to do.

Beginners receive participation trophies or medals for their basics performance (no 1st/2nd/3rd place awards). In addition, beginner-level students compete in the Belt Tag competition—a fun, non-contact event where the goal is to pull flags from an opponent’s belt. Belt Tag does include rankings, so white belts have the opportunity to win a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place trophy.

This event is about learning, building confidence, and taking the next step in your martial arts journey!

What should I wear to compete at the tournament?

Wear your full uniform (Uniform Top, Uniform Pants, and Belt) and ALL your sparring gear (Level 3 and above).

What if I don’t have sparring gear? Can I still compete?

Yes, you can still compete! For Levels 2, 3, and Black Belt competitors, sparring is optional. If you choose not to spar or don’t have sparring gear, you can still participate in the Forms Competition, where you’ll showcase a form of your choice. However, Belt Tag is only available for Beginners and Level 1 students. There is no belt tag option at Level 2.

If you’re interested in sparring for future tournaments, reach out to your instructors about how to get the proper gear.

Can I still get a shirt on the day of the tournament?

A limited quantity of extra shirts will be available for purchase on the day of the event for $25. However, sizes are limited and cannot be guaranteed.

Can I elect to only spar and not compete in forms competition?

No, everyone must compete in the forms competition.

What events will be held during the tournament?

Beginners: Basic Moves and Belt Tag
Level 1: Forms Competition and Belt Tag
Level 2: Forms Competition and Sparring (optional; Belt Tag is not an option at this level)
Level 3: Forms Competition and Sparring (optional; Belt Tag is not an option at this level)
Black Belts: Forms Competition and Sparring (optional; Belt Tag is not an option at this level)

For Levels 1–Black Belt, the Forms Competition allows competitors to perform any form of their choosing in front of black belt judges. Judges are not evaluating correctness of the form but rather technique, power, and overall performance. Examples include demonstrating strong stances, precise strikes, and powerful kiaps.

Why should I attend the tournament?

The tournament is an incredible opportunity to challenge yourself, sharpen your skills, and build confidence in a positive and competitive environment. It’s also a chance to learn from and connect with your peers.

When should competitors arrive?

Competitors should arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled event time to check in and warm up. Check the event schedule for your specific competition time.

What should competitors bring to the event?

Competitors should bring:
• Full martial arts uniform
• Current belt
• For sparring: required protective gear (helmet, hand and foot pads, chest guard, shin pads, mouthguard, and cup for men)

We also recommend bringing water and snacks (nut-free).

Do I need equipment for Belt Tag?

No additional equipment is needed for Belt Tag. Flags for the event will be provided, and it is a non-contact activity.

Is the competition safe?

Yes. Safety is our highest priority. All sparring participants must wear full protective gear, and certified judges will strictly enforce rules to ensure a safe and fair competition. Belt Tag is completely non-contact.

Can students, family, and friends who aren’t competing still attend?

Yes! We encourage everyone to attend and support the competitors. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the excitement and camaraderie of a martial arts event.
